Serena Confalonieri designs a site-specific installation for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, at Salvioni Milano Durini concept store in via Durini 3, Milan. The set-up, that can be visited from Thursday September 14th until November 4th, shows the most iconic pieces of the brand, and pays homage to one of the company’s most characteristic processes: the Vienna straw weaving. This timeless motif, which characterizes the entire production of the brand, gives the exhibition its title, “A Woven Story“.
The project aims to emphasize the products craftsmanship, together with the historical continuity of Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, from its ancient roots, dating back to the beginning of the last century, and its projection towards the future.
The windows of Salvioni’s space, which develops vertically inside a traditional Milanese building from the early 1900s, become the wings of a stage that hosts this scenographic setup. A series of products alternate in the space, just like a sort of mise-en-scene. They range from timeless icons – such as the N.811 chair, created by Joseph Hoffmann in 1930 – to the most recent collections – such as the Mickey armchair by India Madhavi and the Arcadia pouf by Serena Confalonieri – underlining the historical continuity of the company’s production.
The seats are positioned on backdrops made of Vienna straw. They are also decorated with handmade cross-stitching realized by the designer: these embroideries indicates the name of the product, the designer and year of production. These woven sheets descend from the ceiling behind the furnishings, laying softly on the orange carpet floor, the brand’s colour. The company’s iconic texture, in a macro and multicolor version, is printed on fabric that embraces the entire space, giving color and depth to the setup. Eclectic and elegant, the Tipi lamps by Gebrüder Thonet Vienna in light blue, white and caramel shades complete the set-up by bathing it in a pleasant soft light. The exhibition continues in the two rear rooms, where living areas are surrounded by the same printed fabric in the background. Here, a selection of wooden furniture pieces in natural colors – such as the Mos console and the Snule table – create a cozy environment, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of each element on show.
The project aims to enhance the materials and techniques characteristic of Gebrüder Thonet Vienna also through the use of curved wood which – historically used to create the footrests of the brand’s iconic seats – is here tranlsalted into a decorative element, part of the set-up.

Serena Confalonieri realizza un’installazione site specific per Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, all’interno del concept store Salvioni Milano Durini in via Durini 3 a Milano. Il set-up, visitabile a partire da giovedì 14 settembre fino al 4 novembre, avrà come protagonisti i pezzi più iconici del brand, rendendo omaggio ad una delle lavorazioni più caratteristiche dell’azienda: l’intreccio della paglia di Vienna. Proprio l’intramontabile motivo intrecciato, che caratterizza l’intera produzione del brand, dà il titolo dell’allestimento, “A Woven Story”.
Il progetto mira ad enfatizzare la cura artigianale dei prodotti insieme alla continuità storica di Gebrüder Thonet Vienna tra radici antichissime, risalenti all’inizio del secolo scorso, e uno sguardo proiettato verso il futuro.
Le vetrine dello spazio di Salvioni, che si sviluppa verticalmente all’interno di un tradizionale palazzo milanese di inizio ‘900, diventano le quinte di un palcoscenico che si aprono sullo scenografico allestimento. Proprio come una sorta di mise-en-scene, si avvicendano nello spazio una serie di prodotti che vanno dalle icone intramontabili – come la sedia N.811, realizzata da Joseph Hoffmann nel 1930 – fino alle collezioni più recenti – come la poltrona Mickey di India Madhavi e il pouf Arcadia di Serena Confalonieri – a sottolineare la continuità storica della produzione.
Le sedute sono posizionate su fondali realizzati in paglia di Vienna e decorati con ricami realizzati a mano dalla designer che indicano il nome del prodotto, il designer e l’anno di produzione. Questi teli intrecciati scendono dal soffitto dietro gli arredi, poggiando morbidamente sul pavimento in moquette arancione, colore simbolo del brand. L’iconica trama viene ripresa in versione macro e multicolor stampata su tessuto che abbraccia tutto lo spazio, conferendo colore e profondità all’allestimento. Eclettiche ed eleganti, le lampade Tipi di Gebrüder Thonet Vienna nelle tonalità celeste, bianco e caramello completano il set-up inondandolo di una piacevole luce soffusa.
L’esposizione prosegue nei due ambienti posteriori, dove sono state predisposte delle aree living che mantengono lo stile del set-up con il medesimo tessuto a stampa grafica sullo sfondo. Qui, una selezione di pezzi di arredamento in legno e colori naturali – come la consolle Mos e il tavolo Snule – crea un’ambiente caldo, invitando i visitatori a immergersi nella bellezza di ogni elemento esposto.
Il progetto punta a valorizzare i materiali e le tecniche caratteristiche di Gebrüder Thonet Vienna anche attraverso l’utilizzo del legno curvato che – utilizzato storicamente per creare i poggiapiedi delle iconiche sedute – si trasforma in elemento decorativo come parte del set-up.
