Barbagia collection, designed by Serena Confalonieri, has been realized by Tessile M&Dusa, a weaving workshop in Samugheo, during a residency in Sardinia promoted by ArtiJanus / ArtiJanas and dedicated to artistic craftsmanship and contemporary design. The collection is composed by a series of textile elements in wool and cotton, three cushions and one carpet, realized using the ancient “pibiones” weaving technique, typical of the area. The decorations refer to different elements of Sardinian cultural identity: the Nuragic bronzes, the native plants typical of the area, the terracotta vase representing a characteristic daily life. In all these pieces, the decorative motifs are enclosed in a frame that recalls the pattern of the Sardinian saddlebag, while the initials of the designer and the weaver have been inserted in the four corners of the artifacts, a reference to the ancient custom of Sardinians weavers who used to insert their initials in the artifacts they made. In the three cushions, the iconic elements of Sardinian culture have been revisited through the ironic use of shapes and color. The Sa Murta cushion graphically takes up the natural theme of myrtle plants, flanked by small goats, while Su Brunzu evokes the theme of the warrior of the Nuragic era, represented in the famous bronzes dating back to the Neolithic. The design of a jug instead stands out on the Sa Brungia cushion, thus becoming a tribute to ceramic art, also the protagonist of the ArtiJanus / ArtiJanas project. The carpet incorporates all these traditional Sardinian elements, usually not represented in the textile iconography, mixing them with some recurring motifs, such as the frame that incorporates the pattern of the shepherds’ water bottles; or again, the initials of Serena Confalonieri and the craftswoman who made the carpet, embroidered in the corners. The name S’Abba, dialectal equivalent of “water”, refers instead to the blue zigzag motif, which reflects the movement of water. ArtiJanus / ArtiJanas is an experimental project about the relationship between design and craftsmanship promoted and supported by the Foundation of Sardinia, with the scientific and artistic direction of Triennale Milano. The initiative puts design and craftsmanship in contact, proposing a contemporary vision of local materials and processes and offering designers an opportunity to learn from centenary artisanal skills and techniques. Tessile M&Dusa is a workshop composed by women who started working on the loom as a child and who hands down this craftmenship from generation to generation. On the occasion of the residency, Serena Confalonieri was able to fully understand the production and the technical aspects of Sardinian textile manufacture and discover the history and natural elements of this territory.
La collezione, progettata dalla designer e realizzata con l’azienda artigiana Tessile M&Dusa di Samugheo, nasce durante la residenza in Sardegna promossa da ArtiJanus/ArtiJanas e dedicata all’artigianato artistico e al design contemporaneo. Barbagia è composta da una serie di elementi tessili in lana e cotone, cuscini e tappeti, che utilizzano la preziosa tecnica di tessitura “a pibiones”, tipica del territorio. I decori fanno riferimento a diversi elementi dell’identità culturale sarda: i bronzetti nuragici, le piante autoctone tipiche del territorio, la brocca in terracotta rappresentativa di un vivere quotidiano caratteristico. In tutti i pezzi che compongono la collezione i motivi decorativi sono racchiusi in una cornice che riprende lo schema della tessitura della bisaccia sarda, mentre nei quattro angoli dei manufatti sono state inserite le iniziali della designer e della tessitrice, citazione dell’antica usanza delle tessitrici sarde di inserire le proprie iniziali nei manufatti da loro realizzati. Nei tre cuscini gli elementi iconici della cultura sarda sono stati rivisitati attraverso l’uso ironico delle forme e del colore. Il cuscino Sa Murta riprende graficamente il tema naturale delle piante di mirto, affiancato da piccole caprette, mentre Su Brunzu rievoca il tema del guerriero di epoca nuragica, rappresentato nei famosi bronzetti risalenti al Neolitico. Il disegno di una brocca campeggia invece sul cuscino Sa Brungia, diventando così un omaggio all’arte ceramica, anch’essa protagonista del progetto ArtiJanus/ArtiJanas. Il tappeto riprende tutti questi elementi tradizionali della cultura sarda che solitamente non rientrano nell’iconografia tessile, mixandoli con alcuni motivi che sono invece ricorrenti, come ad esempio la cornice che riprende il pattern delle borracce dei pastori; o ancora, le iniziali di Serena Confalonieri e dell’artigiana che ha confezionato il tappeto, ricamate negli angoli. Il nome S’Abba, corrispettivo dialettale di “acqua”, si riferisce invece al motivo azzurro a zigzag, che riprende il movimento dell’acqua. ArtiJanus/ArtiJanas è un progetto sperimentale di cultura del design e dell’artigianato promosso e sostenuto dalla Fondazione di Sardegna, con la direzione scientifica e artistica di Triennale Milano. L’iniziativa ha voluto mettere in contatto design e artigianato, proponendo una visione contemporanea di materiali e lavorazioni locali e offrendo ai progettisti un’occasione di confronto con artigiani e tecniche centenarie. M&Dusa, infatti, è un laboratorio composto da sole donne che hanno iniziato a lavorare al telaio fin da bambine e che conservano questo mestiere tramandato di generazione in generazione. In occasione della residenza, Serena Confalonieri ha potuto comprendere a fondo gli aspetti tecnici legati alla produzione e la nascita della manifattura tessile sarda e scoprire la storia e gli elementi naturali del territorio.
